Since we retired, money for gifts is short. After seeing a show on Oprah featuring a "Pie of the Month Club" I decided I would gift my oldest son with his own "Mom's Pie of the Month" for his birthday.

The Club on Oprah was very expensive (over $400 a year plus $35 shipping per month). I make a recipe for 18 pie crusts and freeze them so ingredients are ready. I got apples very inexpensively at a local orchard (they sell seconds) and froze them ready to bake.
This year I added another son for pies and the two youngest got a "Cookie of the Month Club" for their birthdays (get free recipes at our Cookie Club). I sometimes fix savory pies or fruit that is in season or cream but their favorite is lemon which is very cheap to make. I make the cookie dough and freeze it in quantity.
I know they all like their gifts because they call to remind me it is a new month and I love trying out new recipes on them. My oldest son asked for another year when his birthday rolled around this year.
