Homemade Halloween Costume: GI Joe and Memories

Submitted by Esperanza of New Mexico

GI Joe costume 1

"GI Joe and Memories of Long Ago"

While all the other children were trick-or-treating in their store-bought costumes like Ninja Turtles, Avengers, Frozen and Disney characters, my son went out in a creation he put together on his own. Instead of feeling sad he didn't have a superhero costume that costed a lot like other kids, he proudly put his outfit together, and it ended up being so meaningful for many people.

We went trick-or-treating at a nursing home with senior citizens. You could see the faces of the older gentlemen light up as they saw his "costume". They proclaimed "GI Joe!" as he asked for candy. The first time it was sweet, the second and third time, I started to notice the honor and love in their voices as they saw him in his army gear. I believe it reminded them of bittersweet memories of themselves and loved ones who have served.

When we went trick-or-treating in the neighborhood, the same thing happened with the senior citizen men. We went home and I talked to my son about how veterans have served our country and we have to keep them in our prayers and hearts and show them respect.

While he is a shy kid, he makes a special effort to tell vets and active soldiers "Thank you for your service" and I'm a proud mama that he chose and put together this costume completely on his own.

He may not be a superhero like Spiderman and the Hulk, but he was a hero in his own way and put a smile on so many faces this Halloween.
