Homemade Christmas Ornaments: Knitted Felt

Knitted Felt Ornaments 1

"Knitted Felt Ornaments"

I make ornaments for my nieces and nephews every year - and they get either hearts, stars or sheep, and my youngest niece (the fourth in her family gets a tree). That way each knows which ornament is theirs.

These ornaments are made by knitting a piece of fabric out of feltable wool. I wanted to add colour to the fabric so I added an eyelash type yarn that I got years ago at a yarn shop in Toronto. For the sheep I added it every row, but the heart and star I was a little less generous. This is up to the knitter.

I washed the knitted fabric with my sheets and towels, which I can do in hot water. This felted or fulled the fabric and did my laundry at the same time. It took two loads to get the fabric filled to my satisfaction. I then cut out the shapes. The black from between the legs of the sheep became their heads. I used a loop of yarn to make the hangers. On some of the extras I hot-glued a brooch pin, so I have pins for my coat as well.

It was a fun project, and I enjoyed it immensely!
