Chocolate: When to Stock Up

Money Saving Tip of the Month (featured column)
submitted by Linda Ludwick

During the year we use a lot of chocolate. I use it for cakes, cookies, chocolate covered pretzels and strawberries. Buying all that baking chocolate can be expensive, but not with my tip!

After the holidays, stores will often put Hershey's milk chocolate kisses on sale for dirt cheap. I usually get them for a quarter a bag (or at least 50-75% off). You can get M&M's that way too, and other chocolate that is great for baking.

I buy enough to last me all year!

Then I just chop them up to make chocolate chips or use for baking, or melt them down for chocolate covered treats.

People beg me to make my cakes all year and I just go to my chocolate reserves.

You would be surprised how much money this saves!

Editor's Note: We checked with the Hershey company and solid chocolate products will maintain their quality if well wrapped and stored in a cool, dry place. Depending on the storage conditions, they have their best flavor for up to one year! :o)
