How to Make a Carpet or Large Rug for Your Room

Money Saving Tip of the Month (featured column)
submitted by Christine Janis

I recently decided I needed a new carpet for my bedroom before winter comes. The old one was a hand-me-down (Yay!) and it has lasted many years. However, it is now very threadbare. As I didn't have the $500 plus needed for a new carpet to fit my 12’ x 17’ room space, I decided to make one.

First, I went to the local craft store and bought 4 3'x 5' pieces of latch hook fabric, and sewed them together at the edges. Total cost $40, minus a 40% off coupon from Michael’s.

Then I sent an email blast to friends and family asking for old t-shirts, any condition. My brother even gave me a set of his old t-shirt fabric sheets. I then cut the shirts into 4" x 1" strips and used them as the fabric for the latch hook.

It took about two months of diligently working every night, but I now have a 12' x 5' carpet that is very soft and warm.

Since this worked I am going to buy another 8 pieces and start again so the rug will be big enough. For approximately $120 and a whole lot of time, I will have a really cool, handmade, upcycled carpet for my room. Hopefully before winter.
